Dublin Walking Tour

We started the day at Belvedere College with a journal entry and soon had a walking tour of Dublin down O’Connell Street. (named for the Great Liberator of the Catholic Emancipation Movement Daniel O’Connell) We passed the Spire which is the tallest sculpture in the world. We then moved on to Trinity College. The campus was huge, especially for a school in the middle of a city. We then made our way into the school library which held the Book of Kells. The Book of Kells is made up of the four Gospels, but with a lot of artwork and pictures. Next, we moved into the Long Room which was a long hall with two floors filled with books dating back to before the 16th century. (also saw a 15th century harp made of oak, willow and brass, an emblem of the early Irish bardic society) After leaving Trinity we went over the Ha’ Penny Bridge where everyone threw a ha’ penny into the River Liffey for good luck.
Then we walked up O’Connell Street to the GPO (General Post Office-headquarters of the 1916 Easter Uprising) which was a wicked big post office and the columns had bullet holes.
Then we arrived back at Belvedere where we attended small groups who talked about Community Care which is a lot like our Community Service. (good thing we flew in on Wednesday morning….the sky is sunny here but airports in Dublin and England have been shut down due to a cloud of volcanic ash in the upper atmosphere that was caused by an eruption in Iceland)
